Where the Magic Happens: San Marcos, Lake Atitlan

Some photos from my first few weeks in San Marcos:

Rachel and I arrived in San Marcos together with Scott; there we met Ciaran and Toronto (Clockwise from top left: "Toronto", Ciaran, myself, Scott, Rachel)

The collection of signs at the docks that greet you upon your arrival to San Marcos.

This part of San Marcos, unfortunately slightly segregated from the main village where the locals reside, is connected by narrow pathways like this and the one you see in the photo below. There are no cars, which keep things peaceful and quiet! The yellow building on the right is the not-so-reliable internet cafe.

A mid-day swim off the rocks with Ciaran and Rachel before the afternoon storm rolls in...

Me and Rachel!
Looking back toward the village--which you can't see--from the swimming rocks.

A view from the rocks in the opposite direction--across the lakes and toward the mountains; my absolute favorite swimming spot.

Fishing.

There were always women and children doing laundry on the rocks.

Caught in the rain; what better way to keep yourself dry than holding a banana leaf overhead?

Me and the Irishman.

The view from one of the docks that wasn't used for anything other than just sitting around and staring out onto the lake, pondering the meaning of life... things like that :)

Still sitting on that dock...

Still sitting on that dock.

These photos were taken during a trip into Panajachel (Pana) with Rachel and Ciaran:

Sitting on the boat dock in San Marcos, waiting for the lancha to arrive and take us away to Pana.

The lovely blue that coats the inside of the lanchas. I think this boy was on his way to school.

I couldn't help but quickly snap this photo of this woman while she wasn't looking.

While we were sitting down to eat lunch, we got approached by three young girls trying to sell their headbands and scarves to us. We tried to be polite and tell them "no thank you" over and over again...

Then they started wrapping our heads in the scarves, completely ignoring us ignoring them...

Finally we each agreed to buy something from them if they'd take a photo with us--and go away (despite how endearing they were).

The following pictures were taken on the day that Rachel and Ciaran left San Marcos. I remember watching the lancha glide over the lake away from me, my eyes suddenly swelling up with tears and a sudden feeling of emptiness inside as I watched my good friends disappear into the distance. It was a sad day.

Rachel and Ciaran :)

Haha.

While we were waiting for their boat, this guy invited us on top of his to take a picture! I think he was bored.

Our last picture together.

These are some of the gals from Las Piramides; they arrived on a boat coming from San Pedro while we were waiting.
